SO MANY EGG LABELS, SO LITTLE WE KNOW ABOUT THEM
You might be eating your extremely healthy egg whites when your friend, a gym-freak and health conscious friend at that, would ask “Hey, is it organic?”
If you have an answer for this, then kudos to you, because the following information would make you go “That’s so true!”
But if you don’t know or if you are confused about the division among the labels then welcome! You’ve come to the right place.
Health conscious consumers (like your friend) know to look for labels like “organic,” “free-range,” “pastured” and “cage-free,” but while you may think these are interchangeable, they’re actually not.
What Do They Really Mean?
Organic chicken farming is done when the poultry is fed with an organic all natural feed. Pretty simple, right? But it’s just not that easy. Due to the crazy demand of organic eggs, commercial egg industry owners found a few loopholes and marketed their own eggs as “organic”.
For an egg to be considered as organic, it means that the laying hens must have access to the outdoors and cannot be raised in cages. Only natural molting can occur within the flock, forced molting is not allowed. This also requires maintenance of basic animal welfare standards.
And this also means that their feed is antibiotic-free and so they provide more protein than a commercially raised eggs. Proving that the organic egg’s high price and equally high demand is right.
Free-Range or Cage-Free or Pasture-Raised
Essentially Free-range, cage-free and pasture-raised mean the same – eggs from the hens that are raised without being caged. But the catch is that the regulations for a free-range egg don’t specify the amount of time the hen should spend outdoors or the amount of outdoor space that it must be exposed to. Additionally, free-range chickens might eat non-organic feed and are sometimes given antibiotics & growth hormones.
Cage-free literally means that the hens are not caged and yet again, their feed may not be organic or naturally foraged feed.
Pasture-raised eggs are from the hens that roam freely outdoors on a pasture where they search around for their natural diet, which includes seeds, green plants, insects and worms.
The labels may seem overwhelming, but knowing them is what would protect you and your family from unhealthy food habits. Choosing the organic and cost-efficient way is in your hands.
