Cost Of Organic Food

With all the less number of chemicals that are used in the organic food products, you might think it is comparatively lesser in price. But that’s not the case. The cost of organic food is typically 20 percent to 100 percent more than their conventionally produced equivalents.

Why is that? What is so special about it?

We will give you 6 reasons to justify the expensive tag that is attached to all the organic food.

Before going further see why you should prefer organic over others!

Let the match begin!

Cost Of Organic Food vs Conventional Food

1. No Chemicals (aka) More Work

The Organic Farming Research Foundation says that “The organic price tag more closely reflects the true cost of growing the food: substituting labor and intensive management for chemicals, the health and environmental costs of which are borne by society.”

The conventional farmers use pesticides and other chemicals that give the yield faster than organic farmers. They also hire more workers for tasks like hand-weeding, cleanup of polluted water, and the remediation of pesticide contamination.

2. Demand Is Higher Than The Supply

Organic farmland only accounts for 0.9 percent of total worldwide farmland, and organic farms tend to produce less than conventional farms. Conventional farmers can reduce the costs when it’s done in bulk, but that’s not the case of organic farmers and their farmlands.

The resources are done & dusted because of the crazy increase in the population. So when the demand is higher than the supply, it is inevitable that the quality reduces too.

3. The Holy Grail Is Expensive

Fertilizers – the core of farming.
Using chemical fertilizers in food products, is the cheapest and fastest way that the conventional farmers choose to give their yield. It is easy to transport.

But organic farmers shrug these inexpensive solutions to keep their crops healthy and natural. They use compost and animal manure, which is surprisingly more expensive to ship.

4. Post-Harvest Management Cost

The shipping and the separation of organic foods are different and expensive compared to the conventional food products. The organic food products must be kept separately to avoid cross-contamination and must be shipped in smaller quantities.

Moreover, organic farms are usually located in remote places and further from major cities, increasing the shipping cost.

5. The Organic Badge

In India NPOP (National Program For Organic Production) and its regulatory body APEDA (Agricultural And Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) have laid down the guidelines for organic certification and all products that are organically certified displays the ‘India Organic’ logo for customer to easily identify certified products.

It is not easy to get this certification for your food product. There are certain guidelines that must be followed and certain standards to be met for a food product to be considered as “Organic” and be certified by the Indian government.

6. Time-Consuming

Time is money. Not only are organic farms typically smaller than conventional ones, but they also, on average, take more time to produce crops because they refrain from using the chemicals and growth hormones used by conventional farmers.

There are various misconceptions about organic food that are too ridiculous to ignore

An organic food product must be delivered to a consumer after all these hardships and people still question why it is expensive. The quality, especially when it comes to food, is the most important thing to consider.
